Academic Recognition

Picture
Chairperson: Alice Wong
The Academic Recognition committee works on several projects throughout the year. One of the many projects involves updating the honor roll board (located on the northeast side of the first floor) after each marking period.  This committee also recognizes former NHS members on occasions such as Alumni Homecoming Day. This committee will also host various workshops about applying to college, writing resumes, and learning how to write effective college essays.

Alumni

Chairperson: Nicholas Raskin
The Alumni committee is responsible for helping the Alumni Foundation. Committee members get to work directly with the Alumni Foundation in the Alumni Office.  In the Alumni Office, members are responsible for a variety of things that aid in the planning of events, including the annual Alumni Homecoming Day. It is mandatory for every member of the Alumni committee to volunteer at the Alumni Office at least once a week during their lunch periods or after school for those without a lunch period.  And as the year progresses, your chairperson may require members to help extra days when necessary.

College Services

Picture
Chairperson: Amy Hui Ru Liu
The College Services committee is responsible for helping the entire senior class with their college process.  The committee works mostly during their lunch periods processing college applications in the college office (but if members do not have a lunch period, they may work after school also).  The committee also holds major events such as College Information Night, Financial Aid Night, and the BTHS College Fair.  By working in the college office, you will be well informed of the college process.  As a senior, you can take care of your own applications.  As a junior or sophomore, you will know exactly what to expect.

Communications

Picture
Chairperson: Alexandru Malcoci
The Communications committee is the division in charge of keeping NHS informed. NHS is a really large organization with more than 500 members.  Since we are so large, it is easy for members to forget an event or not even know that it exists.  That is where the Benchmark comes in.  Made by the Communications committee, the Benchmark is NHS’s own newspaper that informs members about things that are happening in the society.  The Benchmark reports on school events, society events, additions to NHS, and all other related material as well as does profiles of colleges so that members can be introduced to new schools and other interesting features.  Communications is definitely the committee to join if you want to work your writing chops.

Community Services

Picture
Chairperson: Ryan Pang
The Community Services committee caters to local volunteer opportunities and commits time to organizing an NHS initiative in these various projects.  The committee often works during weekends and vacations at these events.  The committee will accompany the Key Club in their walks throughout the upcoming year.  Therefore, those that are also in Key Club will receive credit for both clubs.  This committee can help you reach your Brooklyn Tech community service requirements as well as build an excellent college profile in terms of extracurricular activities. Your dedication and commitment means a whole lot to your community!

Fundraising

Picture
Chairperson: Sarah Huang
The Fundraising committee is an essential part of NHS because it raises money to fund NHS activities and major events, including the Induction dinner at the end of the school year. Running the NHS store on the 1st floor center section is one of the most important parts of being in the committee. Members should be creative in producing new and practical fundraising ideas as well as being persuasive during sales.  It will also be most convenient for members to have a free lunch period and be available after school and/or in the early morning periods on certain days to participate in sales.

Induction

Picture
Chairperson: Daria Chernysheva
The Induction committee has two main events that it must execute each year: Fall Induction and Spring Induction.  We basically plan each event or “party.”  Fall Induction is pretty simple since it takes place in the auditorium.  On the contrary, Spring Induction is a little more difficult since it must take place in a catering hall or restaurant.  Around December, each member will have to do some research regarding where the venue should be.  Portfolios will be collected from each member.  Although this may seem like a lot of work, this is the only big event that the committee organizes. We would usually meet approximately 4 times throughout the entire year.

Mentoring

Picture
Chairperson: Yiman Chen and Tifani Ng
The Mentoring committee is dedicated to guiding fellow Tech students through their high school careers. We provide guidance and support to any students who may need our help. Members of the Mentoring committee will become experts in a Tech student's life and will share their knowledge to anyone who may be seeking direction and advice. Mentors will act as “Big Brothers/Big Sisters” to their mentees and will guide them through things such as adapting to life at Tech, problems in and out of school, or anything else that they may need help with.
Members of the committee will be working with freshmen and sophomores. We will also be helping out in events that relate to them such as freshmen orientation and sophomore major selection. In addition, members will be required to be a part of the Mentoring Club and take part in projects that would help freshmen succeed in the beginning of their high school career.

Parent Services

Picture
Chairperson: Tony Khikmatov
The Parent Services committee is designed to help encourage parent participation and involvement in Tech activities.  This committee will meet about once or twice a month after school.  Members may have to work with the Parent Coordinator, Mrs. Chan, in room 1W2 during their lunch periods or after school. In addition, members will work alongside the PTA during various fundraisers and other events associated with the PTA, such as parent workshops.  Also, members must be able to work well with others as a team to help complete various other projects that will need the involvement of Tech parents.

School Environment

Picture
Chairperson: Angela Chan
The School Environment committee is committed to providing a scenic and informed school environment through updates on school bulletin boards, posters, signs, and fliers on every floor. This committee will meet at least 3 times a week during all lunch periods depending on the amount of work that there is. Members will be informed ahead of time when they are to report, what floor they are to report, and what they are to do through email. If there are projects that require a week's worth or staying after school, members will be informed ahead of time as well. This committee is also responsible for making any signs or posters that the school may need and for assisting any teachers or faculty members with updating bulletin boards.

Tours

Picture
Chairperson: Michael Galka-Giaquinto
The Tours committee talks to prospective students and their parents during various Tech events, such as morning tours and open houses.  Our members are confident about themselves and are not afraid to speak loudly.  Thus, members of the Tours committee most likely start school 2nd period.  This committee does not meet outside regular meetings except at these events, and giving up lunch periods is not an issue.

Tutoring

Picture
Chairperson: Simon Chen
The Tutoring committee provides direct one to one peer tutoring.  We tutor a number of subjects ranging from Algebra to Calculus in Mathematics, from Biology to Physics in Science, as well as other courses like History and English. You should have high grades in one of these subjects if you wish to be a tutor in order to provide students with the best help necessary to achieve the best grade possible.  We also host events to tutor individuals on standardized exams such as Regents, SAT Subject Tests, AP’s, and SAT’s.  You even receive service credit for attending half of the meetings!  Ask questions, learn, get educated, and get service credit right here at NHS Peer Tutoring.
